Sodium & Potassium Silicates

Binder systems for electrode coating and flux agglomeration.

Silicate binders hold an electrode coating onto the core wire. The wet mix has to extrude smoothly, then dry and bake into a coating that survives handling, transport and the thermal shock of striking an arc — and the silicate is what makes that possible.

Sodium and potassium silicates behave differently in the arc, so most formulations use a blend. Potassium contributes arc stability, particularly on AC; sodium is generally the stronger binder.
